About Helen
Helen Sutton is a contemporary artist based on the Kent coast, working primarily in acrylics. Her paintings draw on the shifting light, colour, and atmosphere of the landscapes around her, the energy of everyday scenes, and the emotional presence of animals.
After a long and fulfilling career in NHS leadership, Helen has returned to painting with renewed purpose, bringing the same depth of observation, emotional intelligence, and commitment to craft that shaped her professional life.
She now works from her home studio, where her animals and the surrounding coastal villages, sea views, and ever-changing weather offer a constant source of inspiration.
Her work is characterised by expressive colour, layered textures, and an intuitive approach to composition. Helen is drawn to capturing the colour and atmosphere, the movement, the quietness — rather than a literal representation of place.
Artist Statement
‘My favourite painting are ones that have meaning to me. My swimming dogs capture the joy and freedom of movement in water, inspired by swimming in lakes in Provence. More recently, I've become fascinated by the light and shadow and the way they can transform an ordinary scene. ’
